  • Menu and recipe development: Design and develop new recipes for breads, pastries, desserts, and other baked goods.
  • Production oversight: Supervise and manage the daily production of all pastry and baked items, ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Team leadership: Lead, train, and mentor the bakery and pastry staff, fostering a positive and efficient work environment.
  • Quality control: Ensure all products meet high standards for taste, presentation, and consistency.
  • Inventory and ordering: Manage the inventory of ingredients and supplies, place orders, and monitor stock levels within budget.
  • Food safety and sanitation: Implement and enforce all food hygiene and Health and Safety standards.

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Experience: Several years of experience in a professional bakery or pastry role is typically required, with some positions asking for a culinary degree.
  • Creativity: The ability to create new and exciting recipes is crucial.
  • Leadership: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are needed to motivate and manage a team.
  • Technical knowledge: In-depth understanding of various baking techniques and a good knowledge of different types of pastry.
  • Business acumen: Skills in cost control, inventory management, and menu pricing are often necessary.
  • Flexibility: The ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and evenings, is often required.
