Import Ocean Freight Operations Manager
Job DescriptionThe Import Ocean Freight Operations Manager will be responsible for leading and managing the import ocean freight operations for FCL, LCL, and consolidation. This includes developing pricing strategies, negotiating rates with carriers, and maintaining strong relationships with shipping lines, co-loaders, and overseas agents.
This role requires overseeing pre-alerts, booking coordination, documentation, customs compliance, and end-to-end import shipment handling. The manager will also coordinate with internal departments to ensure timely cargo clearance and delivery, while ensuring compliance with all local and international import regulations, customs laws, and trade compliance requirements.
A key aspect of this role is to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround time for import processes. Additionally, the manager will be responsible for managing and mentoring the import operations team, allocating resources, setting key performance indicators (KPIs), monitoring performance, and providing ongoing training.
Another critical responsibility is to monitor departmental profit and loss, ensure cost control, and prepare regular budgets. The manager will also collaborate with the sales and business development teams to identify new opportunities and grow the import customer base.
Finally, the Import Ocean Freight Operations Manager will be expected to maintain high standards of customer service, promptly resolving issues and ensuring consistent client satisfaction. They will also generate regular management information systems (MIS) reports for senior management on import operations, cost efficiency, and process improvements.
Required Skills & ExperienceTo be successful in this role, the candidate should have a strong knowledge of international import practices, customs clearance procedures, documentation, and INCOTERMS. Excellent leadership and people management abilities are essential, as well as strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
