Procurement Specialist: Minerals and Mining Sector

The role of a Procurement Specialist in the minerals and mining sector is multifaceted, requiring strategic planning, vendor management, and compliance with industry standards.

Job Description:

The Procurement Specialist will oversee the procurement process for raw materials, equipment, spare parts, consumables, and contracted services. This includes developing and executing procurement strategies tailored to the minerals and mining industry, sourcing and negotiating contracts, maintaining vendor relationships, and ensuring timely supply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute procurement strategies: Identify opportunities for cost savings, monitor market trends, commodity prices, and logistics costs.
  • Sourcing, negotiation, and contract finalization: Source, negotiate, and finalize contracts for equipment, spare parts, explosives, fuel, and other mining-related consumables.
  • Vendor relationship management: Maintain strong relationships with local and international suppliers to ensure uninterrupted supply.
  • Inventory planning and monitoring: Ensure inventory levels are adequate to meet production demands while minimizing stockouts and overstocking.
  • Supplier evaluation and performance monitoring: Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, reliability, pricing, and delivery timelines.
  • Compliance and risk management: Ensure all purchases comply with statutory requirements, safety norms, and environmental regulations.
  • Logistics and transportation management: Manage contracts with logistics providers for mineral transportation.
  • Process improvement and automation: Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation in procurement processes.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Mining Engineering, or related field (MBA preferred).
  • 7–10 years of procurement experience, with at least 4–5 years in the minerals/mining sector.
  • Strong knowledge of mining equipment, spare parts, raw materials, and international trade regulations.
  • Excellent negotiation, vendor management, and contract drafting skills.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems, inventory management, and MS Office.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership abilities.
  • Familiarity with safety, statutory compliance, and sustainability practices in mining.
