Responsibilities:

Apply technical knowledge to develop new and existing products to meet market needs for Textiles and Fibres, and answer technical enquiries, which consist of solving both complex and straightforward problems. 

Design and carry out laboratory experiments for product development and application testing in Textiles and Fibres. Review the results and seek answers to problems encountered through collection of data and investigation. Decide how to proceed with next experiment/stage of project. Assist less experienced staff through the same process. 

Design, arrange and carry out plant trials, liaising when necessary, with other technical and commercial teams. 

Communication is verbally within research group and through e-mail and written technical reports suitable for internal and external distribution, in which complex scientific information is presented in appropriate form for the audience. Training presentations are given when required.

Keep sales and marketing teams, and department manager, up to date with developments on projects. 

Allocate short and medium-term projects (from couple of days to more than 1 year) to self and other members of team. Translate project objectives into experimental work and, ultimately, new products. Plan, run and monitor progress on all projects to deliver results on time. Unexpected projects do come up that must be carried out immediately and this means re-organising the workload of self and others.

Provide technical support for product and chemistry related enquiries from the customers. Participate in customer technical meetings and training events if required.

Appraise, coach and develop staff through effective use of performance management techniques.

Responsible for selecting most viable development routes in projects that can either be complex or straightforward. Assist less experienced staff to do the same. Line manager will always be kept informed of significant changes in progress of the project 

Expected to come up with viable solutions to problems within projects. Expected to identify opportunities for new projects. Expected to enhance knowledge of technology area and relevant scientific techniques to continuously improve research capability.


Essentials:

Education: Tech / Tech in Textiles and Fibres with 8 to 10 years of experience

A background of laboratory experimental work, preferably in related area. People & project management skills
Ability to progress multiple projects simultaneously to successful conclusions under own initiative.
Creative & tenacious with good planning & problem solving skills. Able to lead and motivate team of scientists. 
Good written communication skills, numerate, attention to detail.
Ability to interact constructively within department and with other departments. 
Adaptable around changing project requirements and ability to prioritise.
Knowledge of IP and regulatory issues.

Follow site safety requirements, ensure all laboratory activities are conducted in accordance with statutory, group and leglislative requirements.
Ensure all procedures are followed by all team members.
