Job Description:

A Steel Industry Fitter's job involves accurately assembling, installing, and maintaining mechanical and structural steel components according to blueprints. Key responsibilities include cutting, shaping, and fabricating metal parts, using various hand and power tools, and performing routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections to ensure safety and efficiency. The role requires strong technical skills, the ability to interpret engineering drawings, and a commitment to safety procedures, particularly when working with heavy machinery and hot metal. 

Key responsibilities

  • Assembly and Installation: 
    Fit and assemble structural steel components, machinery, and mechanical systems based on technical drawings and blueprints. 


  • Fabrication: 
    Cut, shape, and modify metal parts using hand and power tools to meet precise dimensions and specifications. 


  • Maintenance and Repair: 
    Perform routine maintenance, diagnose mechanical issues, and repair or replace faulty equipment like pumps, gearboxes, and motors. 


  • Quality Control: 
    Inspect and measure components to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with safety standards. 


  • Safety Compliance: 
    Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, especially when working with heavy machinery, hot metal, and power tools. 



Essential skills and qualifications
  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to use various hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment. 
     
  • Blueprint Reading: Must be able to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications. 
     
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication systems. 
     
  • Problem-Solving: Capable of troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues efficiently. 
     
  • Physical Stamina: Must be able to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, and work in potentially confined or demanding environments. 
     
  • Experience: Typically requires experience in fabrication, fitting, or a related field, often starting with qualifications like an ITI Fitter certificate.
