Job Description:
A General Manager for a Sponge Iron Division in a steel plant is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall operation, profitability, and strategic planning of the division. Key responsibilities include overseeing daily production, managing all aspects of raw material handling, ensuring stringent quality control, maintaining equipment reliability, and leading cross-functional teams. The role also involves managing budgets, implementing cost-control measures, and ensuring compliance with environmental norms. 
 
Key responsibilities
  • Production and Operations:
    • Manage the day-to-day operations of the sponge iron plant to meet production targets.
    • Oversee the raw material handling system, including crushing, screening, and washing.
    • Plan and schedule monthly production based on raw material availability and quality.
    • Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the DRI kiln and other related equipment.
    • Make decisions on charge mix and control process parameters for optimal product quality and cost.
  • Quality and Compliance:
    • Ensure strict quality control of both raw materials and the final sponge iron product according to industry standards.
    • Coordinate with the quality control team to perform necessary testing using relevant equipment.
    • Ensure the plant maintains all environmental and pollution control norms.
  • Maintenance and Safety:
    • Implement and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance schedules to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
    • Oversee the refractory lining of kilns and other critical equipment.
    • Ensure the highest safety standards are maintained within the production facility.
  • Team and Budget Management:
    • Provide leadership and guidance to cross-functional teams, including production, quality, and maintenance.
    • Draw up and manage the operational and capital budgets for the division.
    • Implement cost-control measures to keep expenditure within the budget.
    • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and vendors. 
 
Required skills and experience
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Deep technical knowledge of sponge iron production and related equipment, such as DRI kilns.
  • Experience with raw material handling and processing.
  • Proficiency in quality control procedures and testing equipment.
  • Experience with budget management and cost control.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and safety standards.
