A Purchase Head in an integrated steel plant oversees all procurement activities, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective supply of raw materials, equipment, and services. This role involves strategic sourcing, vendor management, contract negotiation, and cost control, while also leading and developing a team of purchasing professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Sourcing:
    Develop and implement sourcing strategies for raw materials (like iron ore, coal, etc.), equipment, and other necessary supplies. 


  • Vendor Management:
    Establish and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, ensuring quality, reliability, and competitive pricing. 


  • Contract Negotiation:
    Negotiate favorable terms and conditions with suppliers, managing contracts to minimize risks and optimize costs. 


  • Cost Control:
    Implement cost-saving measures, track procurement expenses, and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements. 


  • Inventory Management:
    Collaborate with planning and production teams to forecast material requirements and maintain optimal inventory levels. 


  • Team Leadership:
    Lead and develop a team of purchasing professionals, providing guidance, training, and performance management. 


  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Ensure all procurement activities comply with relevant regulations and company policies. 


  • Risk Management:
    Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with the supply chain, including price fluctuations, supply disruptions, and quality issues. 



Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    10-15 years of experience in purchasing/procurement, preferably within the metal or manufacturing industry, including experience with integrated steel plants. 


  • Education:
    Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related field. An MBA is often preferred. 


  • Technical Skills:
    Proficiency in procurement systems, ERP systems (like SAP), and advanced Excel skills. 


  • Soft Skills:
    Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers. 


  • Knowledge:
    In-depth knowledge of supply chain best practices, contract law, and relevant industry regulations. 



In the context of Raipur, Chhattisgarh:
  • The Purchase Head would need to be familiar with local and regional suppliers, considering transportation costs and logistics within the region.
  • They would also need to be aware of any specific regulations or environmental requirements relevant to the steel industry in Chhattisgarh.
  • Given the location, experience with sourcing raw materials like iron ore and coal from local mines would be beneficial.
