Senior Editor, Children's Literature

Job Description

The Senior Editor, Children's Literature position will be based at our country office and report directly to the national program coordinator. This is a primarily editorial role in local language children's literature, requiring some travel and frequent interaction with authors, illustrators, publishers, printers, and officials.

We are seeking an experienced editor with a passion for developing high-quality children's educational materials. The successful candidate will have excellent writing and editing skills, as well as experience in managing projects and working with teams.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and creative individual to join our team and make a meaningful contribution to our literacy program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate workshops for writers and illustrators to produce new children's books every year.
  • Edit, finalize manuscripts, and translate them into English.
  • Coordinate with translators, writers, illustrators, designers, and other stakeholders to produce the books.
  • Understand book printing and publishing technical aspects, providing technical advice on bidding and printing processes.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Room to Read's Literacy program design.
  • Define criteria for engaging, relevant, and culturally appropriate reading material for primary school grades.
  • Conduct Gap Analysis to determine available reading materials and identify gaps with respect to ideal book lists.
  • Coordinate distribution of reading materials to project areas.
  • Manage inventory and complete regular reporting documents related to materials development and procurement.
  • Communicate with operations, administration, finance, and HR teams to ensure smooth implementation of program activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in literature/language/education/social sciences or equivalent.
  • Master's in literature/language/education/social sciences or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in developing quality children's educational/learning materials.
  • Understanding of supplementary materials' impact on reading skills and habits.
  • Experience in developing teaching learning materials (TLM) and instruction materials.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
