Head of Quality Assurance Automotive Foundry

Role Overview

The Head of Quality Assurance is responsible for ensuring that all products and processes meet customer, regulatory, and internal quality requirements. This role leads the Quality function across the foundry—from raw materials through casting, machining, and final inspection—to maintain compliance with automotive quality standards such as IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and specific OEM customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

A. Strategic Quality Leadership

  • Develop and implement the foundry's quality strategy aligned with corporate objectives and customer expectations.
  • Lead the Quality Management System (QMS) and ensure its effectiveness and continual improvement.
  • Set quality objectives, KPIs, and improvement targets for all quality-related processes.
  • Act as the management representative for IATF 16949 and customer audits.

B. Product & Process Quality Management

  • Oversee incoming, in-process, and final quality control operations.
  • Approve and control process validation, FMEA, control plans, PPAP, and SPC activities.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) for nonconformities.
  • Ensure casting and machining process controls (metal composition, mold integrity, cooling rates) are maintained and verified.
  • Collaborate with Production, Maintenance, and Engineering to reduce scrap, rework, and process variation.

C. Customer Quality Interface

  • Act as the primary contact for customer quality issues, audits, and approvals.
  • Manage customer complaints, BD reports, and field-return analysis (FRACAS).
  • Lead deployment of customer-specific requirements across departments.
  • Ensure proactive communication with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers regarding product performance and improvements.

D. Supplier Quality Assurance

  • Approve and audit raw material suppliers (alloys, sand cores, consumables).
  • Define supplier quality standards and monitor performance via scorecards and PPAP approvals.
  • Support suppliers in corrective actions and quality improvement programs.

E. Quality Systems & Compliance

  • Maintain certification and compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and relevant safety/environmental standards.
  • Coordinate internal audits, management reviews, and continuous improvement projects (Kaizen, Six Sigma).
  • Ensure compliance with metrology, calibration systems, traceability, and documentation control.

F. Team Development & Leadership

  • Lead and develop the QA team, including engineers, inspectors, metallurgists, and lab technicians.
  • Foster a culture of quality ownership across all organizational levels.
  • Provide training on quality tools (SPC, MSA, APQP, 8D, 5-Why, FMEA).

Authority

The Head of QA has the authority to:

  • Stop production in case of serious quality nonconformities.
  • Approve or reject products and materials that do not meet requirements.
  • Sign off on customer submissions (PPAP, ISIR, FAIR, etc.).
  • Initiate containment actions for defects internally and at customer sites.
  • Approve suppliers based on audits and qualification criteria.
  • Set and enforce quality policies and procedures across the organization.
  • Escalate systemic issues directly to the Plant Manager or Executive Leadership.

Required Competencies

  • Deep understanding of foundry processes (melting, molding, core making, heat treatment, machining).
  • Strong knowledge of automotive quality standards and tools (IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, MSA, SPC, FMEA, 8D).
  • Leadership and communication skills to coordinate cross-functional teams and manage customer relations.
  • Analytical skills for data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Competence in metrology, material testing, and non-destructive testing (NDT).

Qualifications

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: 20+ years in foundry or heavy engineering industries.
