Key responsibilities
Clinical and quality management

  • Monitor outcomes: Regularly review clinical outcomes, conduct audits, and implement changes based on performance data to improve patient satisfaction, reduce readmission rates, and lower mortality rates.

  • Human resources: Lead the recruitment, training, supervision, and performance evaluation of all departmental staff, including medical and non-medical personnel.
  • Resource allocation: Ensure the efficient and effective allocation of resources, including staff, equipment, and consumables.
  • Liaise with stakeholders: Serve as a communication link between department staff, hospital administration, governing boards, and other departments. 
Leadership and development
  • Staff development: Encourage and support continuous professional development for all staff members to enhance individual skills and careers.
  • Mentoring: Train and mentor junior medical staff and new employees, ensuring proper orientation and integration into the department.
  • Promote innovation: Encourage research activities and stay updated on the latest technological and medical advancements.

Qualifications and skills
Educational qualifications
  • A medical degree is often required, with a postgraduate degree in a relevant clinical specialty.
  • A Master of Hospital Administration (MHA), Master of Public Health (MPH), or MBA in Healthcare Management is often preferred.
  • Ten or more years of teaching and/or clinical experience, with significant time spent as a Professor or Associate Professor, may be required in academic medical centers.
