Head of Engineering (CTO) – SaaS Company
The Head of Engineering leads the technical team at a SaaS company, setting the technical direction, building and mentoring high-performing engineering teams, and overseeing the successful delivery and reliability of cloud-based software products. The role balances leadership, strategy, and deep technical expertise to ensure the company's growth and product excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and expand engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and career growth.
- Define and execute the technical vision and long-term technology roadmap, aligning with overall business goals.
- Oversee all stages of the development lifecycle, ensuring code quality, scalability, and timely delivery.
- Set coding standards, development processes, and architecture best practices for designing high-performing, scalable SaaS solutions.
- Direct the design, architecture, and implementation of multi-tenant, cloud-native SaaS platforms using modern cloud services.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Sales, and Customer Success teams to align engineering priorities with customer and business needs.
- Lead technical decision-making related to tools, platforms, integrations, DevOps, and infrastructure, ensuring reliability and security.
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration across technical and business stakeholders.
- Monitor technical risk, delivery velocity, and progress, and report key metrics to C-level executives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, including at least 5 years in a SaaS environment and 3+ years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven track record of leading and scaling engineering teams (20+ people), ideally in the SaaS/cloud software industry.
- Deep expertise in SaaS architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP), and related technologies.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), DevOps, QA, and product delivery for B2B or B2C SaaS products.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience managing technical debt, advocating for best practices, and driving innovation.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with enterprise SaaS, complex sales cycles, and global teams.
- Familiarity with security, compliance, and regulatory standards in SaaS environments.
- Knowledge of data infrastructure, data structures, and analytics for cloud software products.
- Proficiency with modern project management and reporting tools.
