The Associate Consultant in Neurosurgery is responsible for providing comprehensive neurosurgical care under the supervision of the Consultant. The role includes independent and supervised patient management, surgical assistance, participation in academic and research activities, and ensuring adherence to hospital policies, protocols, and quality standards. The position bridges clinical care, academic contribution, and administrative coordination.
Detailed Roles and Responsibilities
A. Clinical Care Responsibilities
i. Inpatient Management
- Conduct thorough preoperative and postoperative rounds.
- Manage patients in wards, high-dependency units, and ICUs, ensuring timely review and appropriate interventions.
- Prepare daily progress notes, discharge summaries, and treatment plans.
- Identify and manage postoperative complications promptly in consultation with senior faculty.
- Ensure adequate pain management and rehabilitation planning.
ii. Outpatient and Follow-Up Services
- Assist to run supervised OPD sessions as per schedule.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and manage neurosurgical disorders - cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve pathologies.
- Advise diagnostic investigations and interpret findings appropriately.
- Offer preoperative counselling, risk assessment, and postoperative follow-up.
- Maintain patient records and ensure continuity of care.
iii. Emergency and Trauma Services
- Attend to emergency calls for neurosurgical cases - head/spine injuries, haemorrhages, tumors, etc.
- Participate in Emergency Room (ER) triage and management with other specialties.
- Remain prepared to lead the neurosurgical trauma response team when on-call.
- Perform or assist in emergency procedures (e.g., burr hole, decompressive craniectomy, EVD insertion).
- Coordinate CT/MRI reviews and rapid surgical decision-making.
iv. Operative Responsibilities
- Assist senior consultants in complex cranial and spinal procedures (e.g., tumor resections, aneurysm clipping, spinal instrumentation).
- Independently perform minor and selected major surgeries, based on competence and departmental protocols.
- Participate in surgical planning, patient positioning, and postoperative management.
- Ensure maintenance of sterility, instrument care, and operative checklists.
- Contribute to operative audits and surgical outcome monitoring.
B. Skill Enhancement Responsibilities
- Conduct bedside teaching and demonstrations for postgraduate trainees and nursing staff.
- Present cases at academic meetings, morbidity & mortality (M&M) discussions, and clinical audits.
- Lead or assist in journal clubs, seminars, case presentations, and CME programs.
- Engage in clinical research projects, case reports, and publications.
- Contribute to protocol development and clinical pathway creation in line with evidence-based guidelines.
- Mentor Staff for thesis work and skill development in neurosurgical techniques.
C. Research and Innovation
- Participate in clinical and translational research, data collection, and clinical trials.
- Develop departmental research proposals and collaborate with basic science teams.
- Present findings at national and international conferences.
- Support the adoption of new technologies (neuronavigation, neuroendoscopy, stereotaxy, neuro-monitoring).
D. Support Admin Roles
- Coordinate with ICU, Radiology, Anaesthesia, Rehabilitation, and other departments for integrated patient care.
- Participate in hospital accreditation activities (NABH documentation, audits, SOP compliance).
- Maintain operating theatre efficiency and ensure timely scheduling of cases.
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies, infection control, biomedical waste disposal, and safety norms.
- Attend necessary meetings, and ethical review committees as required.
E. Patient Safety, Communication, and Ethics
- Obtain informed consent and communicate clearly regarding treatment options, risks, and outcomes.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional decorum at all times.
- Exhibit empathy, compassion, and professionalism in patient and family interactions.
- Report adverse events, near-misses, and sentinel events as per hospital policy.
- Promote patient safety culture within the department.
F. Continuous Professional Development
- Keep updated with advances in neurosurgery, critical care, and neuroimaging.
- Attend conferences, workshops, and CME courses for skill enhancement.
- Maintain valid certifications (BLS, ACLS, ATLS, etc.).
- Participate in peer learning and interdepartmental collaborations.
- Engage in lifelong learning and professional growth.
G. Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Clinical outcomes: Morbidity, mortality, infection rates, re-admission rates.
- Patient satisfaction: Feedback and communication quality.
- Academic contribution: CME participation.
- Operational efficiency: OT utilization, documentation accuracy, turnaround times.
- Compliance: Adherence to hospital policies, safety, and ethical standards.
Required Qualification, Skills and Attributes
- MBBS + MS-GS + MCh / DrNB - Neurosurgery.
- Should possess Medical Council Certificate.
- 3+ years of relevant Experience post MS.
- In-depth knowledge of cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve pathologies.
- Skilled in neurosurgical techniques microscopic, endoscopic, and minimally invasive.
- Competence in neuro-critical care management.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities under pressure.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
