ICU Nurse – Roles and Responsibilities
Role Overview:
An ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Nurse provides specialized care to critically ill patients. They work closely with doctors, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the best patient outcomes. The role requires advanced clinical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly in high-pressure situations.
Key Roles:
- Patient Care Management:
- Monitor and assess the patient's condition continuously.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and nutrition as prescribed.
- Assist with ventilator management and other life-support equipment.
- Critical Care Procedures:
- Perform procedures like intubation assistance, central line insertion support, and arterial blood sampling.
- Ensure infection control during procedures and wound care.
- Monitoring and Reporting:
- Record vital signs, lab results, and observations accurately.
- Report changes in patient condition promptly to the attending physician.
- Document nursing interventions and treatment plans.
- Patient and Family Support:
- Provide emotional support to patients and their families.
- Educate families about patient care, treatments, and recovery expectations.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work in a multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.
- Participate in daily rounds and care planning meetings.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, safety procedures, and infection control measures.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in patient care.
- Emergency Response:
- Act quickly during medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or shock.
- Perform CPR and other life-saving interventions as needed.
- Equipment and Inventory Management:
- Monitor and maintain ICU equipment.
- Ensure that supplies and medications are stocked and readily available.
