**ICU Staff Nurse Job Description**
**Position Title**: ICU Staff Nurse
**Department**: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
**Reports to**: ICU Nurse Manager / Clinical Supervisor
**Job Summary**:
An ICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality, specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This role requires advanced clinical skills to assess, monitor, and treat patients with life-threatening conditions, often involving intensive monitoring and management of vital signs, medications, and medical equipment.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Patient Care**:
- Provide continuous, high-quality care for critically ill patients, closely monitoring their vital signs, symptoms, and progress.
- Administer medications, treatments, and therapies as prescribed by physicians, ensuring proper dosage and monitoring for side effects.
- Perform thorough patient assessments, including physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
- Assist in the development and implementation of individualized care plans for ICU patients.
- **Monitoring and Equipment Use**:
- Continuously monitor patients using advanced medical equipment, including ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, and other life-support devices.
- Assess and document patients' response to treatment, adjusting interventions as necessary.
- Respond promptly to changes in patient condition, initiating appropriate action such as notifying the physician or providing emergency interventions.
- **Patient Safety and Infection Control**:
- Follow strict infection control procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to prevent the spread of infection.
- Ensure the ICU environment is safe, clean, and conducive to patient recovery.
- Administer and monitor intravenous lines, blood products, and other treatments, maintaining sterile techniques.
- **Collaboration and Communication**:
- Work collaboratively with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to provide integrated patient care.
- Communicate effectively with patients’ families, providing them with updates on the patient's condition and explaining complex medical information in an understandable way.
- Participate in daily rounds, providing relevant updates on patient progress and changes in status.
- **Documentation and Reporting**:
- Accurately document all patient assessments, treatments, and responses in the patient's medical record, following legal and hospital protocols.
- Maintain clear and accurate communication with other healthcare professionals regarding the patient's care, treatment plans, and outcomes.
- **Emergency Response**:
- Respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently, such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or other critical situations.
- Participate in emergency protocols and resuscitation efforts as needed.
- Use advanced life support techniques (e.g., ACLS, BLS) in emergency situations.
- **Patient and Family Support**:
- Provide emotional support to patients and their families, offering comfort and reassurance during critical care.
- Educate patients and families about ongoing care needs and treatment plans, providing clear explanations about procedures and recovery expectations.
**Qualifications**:
- **Education**:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is also acceptable.
- **Licensure**:
- Current and valid nursing license in the state/country of employment (RN).
- Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) is preferred or may be required by the employer.
- **Experience**:
- Previous experience working in an ICU or other critical care setting is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge and experience in managing complex, critically ill patients with various medical conditions.
**Skills and Abilities**:
- In-depth understanding of advanced critical care practices and procedures.
- Proficiency with ICU equipment, including ventilators, ECG monitors, infusion pumps, etc.
- Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Compassionate and empathetic, with strong interpersonal skills to work with patients and families.
- Ability to remain calm and focused during emergencies or high-stress situations.
**Physical Requirements**:
- Ability to lift, move, and support patients as needed (up to 50 pounds or more).
- Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods.
- Ability to perform tasks that require bending, reaching, and crouching.
- May be required to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
