Job Description:

An E&I (Electrical & Instrumentation) Technician's job description involves installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial electrical and instrumentation systems, including power distribution, control systems, and process instruments. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting, performing tests (like continuity and insulation resistance), calibrating instruments, conducting loop checks, and ensuring all work complies with safety standards and regulations. 
 
Key responsibilities
  • Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair electrical and instrumentation equipment such as transformers, switchboards, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and control systems.
  • Testing and Calibration: Perform routine inspections and a variety of tests, including continuity, insulation resistance, loop checks, and functional tests. Calibrate instruments to ensure they are functioning correctly and according to specifications.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and fix problems in electrical, instrument, and control systems, which can involve reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure all installations and repairs comply with electrical codes, safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of inspections, tests, and repairs. This includes updating "as-built" drawings and issuing non-conformance reports when necessary.
  • Collaboration: Work with engineers and other team members to resolve system issues and assist in the training and mentoring of other staff. 
 
Essential skills and qualifications
  • Technical Skills: A strong understanding of electrical and electronic systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and experience with tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Communication: Ability to read and interpret technical documents and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and, often, in challenging industrial settings.
