Job Description:

An "Electrician for SMS" job description, or Steel Melting Shop Electrician, involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in an industrial steel-making environment. Responsibilities include performing both preventive and breakdown maintenance on high and low-voltage equipment, troubleshooting electrical faults in motors, drives, and control systems, and ensuring strict adherence to safety procedures. The role also requires accurate record-keeping and close coordination with mechanical and production teams.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Installation and Maintenance: 
    Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment, including high-voltage (HT) and low-voltage (LT) motors, transformers, panels, and control systems. This includes working on equipment specific to a Steel Melting Shop, such as induction furnaces, arc furnaces, ladle refining furnaces, and EOT cranes.


  • Troubleshooting and Repair: 
    Diagnose and repair electrical faults, replacing components like fuses, switches, contactors, and cables as needed.


  • Preventive Maintenance: 
    Conduct routine inspections and perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all electrical equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure smooth operation.


  • Safety Compliance: 
    Ensure all electrical work is performed in strict accordance with safety procedures and standards to prevent accidents.


  • Monitoring and Documentation: 
    Monitor electrical parameters during shifts and maintain detailed logs of all maintenance work performed and any issues encountered.


  • Collaboration: 
    Coordinate with mechanical and production teams to ensure continuous and efficient operations.


  • Additional Tasks: 
    Support automation and PLC-related troubleshooting if required, and assist with major shutdown maintenance and new installations. 



Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: Typically requires an ITI or NCVT certification in electrical trades. 
     
  • Experience: A minimum of 4-6 years of experience, preferably in a factory or heavy industrial setting like a steel plant. 
     
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of electrical systems, including LT/HT lines, electrical maintenance, motors, cranes, and control panels. 
     
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical issues and perform repairs efficiently. 
     
  • Safety Awareness: A strong commitment to following all safety protocols.
