Job Description:
A General Manager (GM) for SMS (Steel Melting Shop) is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall operation of a steel plant, including production, quality, efficiency, and cost control. Key duties involve managing daily operations, developing and implementing strategies, overseeing maintenance, ensuring safety and compliance, managing budgets, and leading the staff to meet production targets. This role requires extensive experience in steelmaking processes like Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Continuous Casting, as well as strong leadership and financial management skills. 
 
Core responsibilities
  • Production and operations: Oversee daily steel production from raw material to finished product, ensuring efficiency and meeting delivery commitments. This includes managing processes like EAF, ladle furnace, and continuous casting.
  • Quality and improvement: Lead the team to improve steel quality and develop processes for various grades of steel. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance, energy efficiency, and productivity.
  • Maintenance: Manage day-to-day maintenance of plant equipment and facilities, prepare maintenance budgets, and ensure the availability of spare parts.
  • Financial management: Manage budgets, control costs, and analyze daily and monthly production costs to maximize profitability.
  • Team leadership and development: Recruit, train, and manage staff, including evaluating performance and ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. 
 
Key requirements
  • Experience: Proven experience in managing steel melting shops, with knowledge of EAF, ladle refining, and continuous casting is crucial. Experience in commissioning new plants is often a plus.
  • Technical skills: In-depth knowledge of steelmaking processes, maintenance management systems (like SAP), and tools for operational efficiency is necessary.
  • Leadership and management: Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are essential for managing a large workforce and complex operations.
  • Business acumen: Experience with planning, budgeting, and financial analysis, as well as an understanding of market demands and forecasting.
