Job Description:

A Mechanical Fitter (SMS) description involves the maintenance, repair, and assembly of mechanical systems, specifically within a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) environment. They work with various equipment like furnaces, cranes, and other machinery found in the SMS area. Their duties include installation, preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs, and ensuring the smooth operation of mechanical systems. 

Key Responsibilities of a Mechanical Fitter (SMS):
  • Fitting and Assembly: Installing, assembling, and aligning mechanical parts of SMS equipment, such as furnaces, continuous casting machines (CCM), ladles, and cranes. 
     
  • Maintenance: Performing both preventative and breakdown maintenance on SMS machinery to minimize downtime. 
     
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of daily maintenance work. 
     
  • Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving mechanical issues in the SMS area. 
     
  • Overhaul: Assisting in the overhaul of mechanical equipment like pumps, gearboxes, and motors. 
     
  • Collaboration: Working with other tradespeople (electricians, welders) and production teams to ensure efficient maintenance and operations. 
     
  • Safety Compliance: Adhering to safety protocols and maintaining a clean work environment. 
     
  • Continuous Improvement: Supporting efforts to improve the efficiency and reliability of mechanical systems. 
     


Skills and Qualifications:
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and machinery for fitting, assembly, and repair. 
     
  • Problem-solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues effectively. 
     
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to perform manual tasks and handle physical demands of the job. 
     
  • Knowledge of Equipment: Understanding the operation and maintenance requirements of various SMS machinery. 
     
  • Safety Awareness: Commitment to safety protocols and procedures. 
     
  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with other team members. 
     
  • Experience: Relevant experience in mechanical fitting, preferably in a similar industrial environment.
