Job Description:

A Production Head for a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) job description involves overseeing the entire steel production process, from raw material to finished steel, while managing the workforce and ensuring quality and safety. Key responsibilities include developing production schedules, improving processes, managing costs, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The role requires strong leadership, a deep understanding of steelmaking, and experience in roles like shift management or as a department head. 
 
Key responsibilities
  • Production management: Oversee daily operations, develop production schedules, and ensure daily/weekly/monthly targets are met.
  • Process and quality control: Ensure quality standards are consistently met by overseeing the entire steelmaking process, including charging, oxygen blowing, tapping, and continuous casting.
  • Cost and resource management: Monitor production costs, optimize resource utilization, and identify areas for cost reduction.
  • Workforce management: Supervise, manage, and lead the production workforce, including performance evaluation and training.
  • Safety and compliance: Ensure all operations comply with safety, health, and environmental standards.
  • Continuous improvement: Innovate and improve production processes, identify trends, and implement solutions.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work with other departments (e.g., Quality Control, PPC) to ensure seamless operations.
  • Technical expertise: Be proficient in steel production specifics, such as preparing charge mix, melting charge, and casting processes. 
 
Qualifications and skills
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is often required.
  • Experience: Proven experience in production management, ideally with significant experience (15+ years) in steel melting shop operations.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Knowledge of steelmaking processes (e.g., induction furnaces, converters, casting).
    • Experience with charge mix preparation and special grades.
    • Familiarity with process improvement techniques like Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma is beneficial.
    • Familiarity with ERP systems is often required.
  • Leadership and Management Skills:
    • Excellent leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
    • Good communication skills.
  • Other Skills:
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • Budgeting and data analysis skills.
