Job Description:
An electrician for a utility company installs, maintains, and repairs electrical power, communication, and control systems, such as those in substations and for streetlights. Key duties include inspecting components like transformers and circuit breakers, troubleshooting faults using testing devices, reading blueprints, and ensuring all work complies with safety codes and regulations. They may also be involved in system switching, calibrating complex protective relays, and mentoring other electricians.
Key responsibilities
- Installation: Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures according to blueprints and codes.
- Maintenance and repair: Inspect, test, and maintain electrical systems, including routine maintenance and replacing old or damaged components.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues using various testing devices to ensure the proper functioning of electrical equipment and systems.
- System management: Handle complex systems, including the calibration and adjustment of protective relays, and perform switching procedures for primary electrical systems.
- Compliance and safety: Ensure all work meets or exceeds the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations, performing work safely and documenting all repairs.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all work performed, supplies used, and systems tested.
- Mentorship: Guide and train apprentice or junior electricians as needed.
