Economist Films is seeking a Researcher to join the production team for the sponsored series, 'Now + Next'. In this role the researcher will support the production of this 6 x series of short-form documentaries.
**Accountabilities**:
**How you will contribute**:
- Undertake independent research to a broad or specific brief, using all sources of reference, both internal and external, including proper note-taking
- Research may involve either a journalistic or academic approach, and will involve finding and contacting individuals and organisations; finding locations for filming; identifying and selecting stock shots and film clips; making a preliminary selection of suitable material and music
- Deliver a solid grounding in journalistic methods for example the ability to research a topic, spot a story and write it up clearly and engagingly
- Be prepared to work as part of a strong and effective team. Able to demonstrate judgement and where appropriate refer issues to more experienced members of the production team
- Take responsibility for delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest documentary-making and writing standards
- Suggest strong stories and offer creative and compelling ways of presenting research material within the programme
- When requested, to attend filming and carry out duties as required, including HD shooting/operating sound
**Experience, skills and professional attributes**:
- Initiating, researching and developing fresh ideas for topical films.
- Keeping abreast of the news and reading a wide range of newspapers, magazines and other source material.
- Suggesting original, thought-provoking and if appropriate humorous treatments.
- Writing clear, concise and accurate briefs for reporters and film-makers.
- Casting the best contributors who will shine on camera, rejecting those who don’t meet the highest standards.
- Fact-checking, sometimes at short notice, to tight deadlines.
- Having the confidence to reject narratives and allegations reported elsewhere as a result of research.
- Adapting to a fast-changing environment.
- Carrying out thorough research telephone interviews with contributors.
- Sourcing props and locations for shoots.
- Negotiating access to locations and securing all permissions.
