Effective IT project management office (PMO) leadership is crucial at organizations with complex projects.

The PMO director oversees the IT project portfolio governance, enforces project management frameworks, and ensures successful execution of all IT projects.

This role drives continuous improvements in addition to owning the PMO program. It also involves a hands-on project management role for critical IT initiatives and leading a team of project managers and coordinators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountability for IT portfolio processes, including IT planning, portfolio governance, project methodology framework, and resource capacity management.
  • Implementation of project management standards and practices across the IT project portfolio.
  • Supervision and mentorship of the project management team, including performance reviews, career growth, and training.
  • Creation and maintenance of staffing plans for internal and external resources.
  • Analysis of project proposals to determine timelines, funding, and required processes.
  • Leadership and motivation to project teams through all project phases.
  • Implementation of effective project communication.
  • Management of project risks and issues, and implementation of mitigation strategies.
  • Alignment of project goals with business objectives and delivery on time and within budget.
  • Employment of agile/scrum methodologies within the organization's software development lifecycle framework.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7+ years experience in project management of complex IT projects.
  • Deep understanding of agile frameworks.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Background in Business Analysis.
  • Proven experience managing an IT portfolio or PMO.
  • Prior team leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing external vendors and contract staff.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and meet goals, define schedules, allocate resources, and implement processes.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and bring clarity to teams.
  • Experience in software product development life cycles and the banking or financial services domain is mandatory.
