JOB SUMMARY

The Battery Cell Safety Test Engineer will be responsible for conducting safety testing of Li-ion battery cells in the product development phase. This role ensures that battery cells meet safety, reliability, and regulatory standards by performing safety-critical tests, identifying risks, and providing actionable feedback for design optimisation.




RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safety Testing: Conduct a variety of safety tests on Li-ion battery cells, including overcharge, short circuit, thermal abuse, puncture, vibration, and crush tests, to evaluate cell safety under extreme conditions.
  • Test Protocol Development: Develop and implement safety test protocols and procedures in compliance with industry standards (e.g., UN38.3, IEC 62133) and regulatory requirements.
  • Risk Identification & Mitigation: Identify potential safety risks and failure modes, provide recommendations for design improvements, and work with engineering teams to mitigate identified risks.
  • Performance Analysis: Analyse test data to assess the safety performance of battery cells, including internal pressure, temperature, and voltage monitoring during tests.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with R&D, design engineers, and quality assurance teams to integrate safety feedback into the product development lifecycle.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed test reports and safety analysis, documenting methodologies, results, failure modes, and corrective actions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with the latest safety standards and testing methodologies, recommending updates to safety test procedures and protocols as necessary.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Battery Safety Testing Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Li-ion battery safety testing, including overcharge, short circuit, thermal abuse, crush, and puncture testing.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with industry safety standards and regulations (e.g., UN38.3, IEC 62133, UL 2054) and the ability to ensure compliance with these standards.
  • Data Analysis & Problem Solving: Ability to analyse safety test data, identify risks, and propose actionable solutions to improve battery cell safety.
  • Test Equipment Proficiency: Hands-on experience with safety testing equipment, including thermal chambers, pressure sensors, and data acquisition systems.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on safety, accuracy, and thorough documentation of test procedures and results.


Desired:

  • Collaboration & Communication: Effective communication skills to present safety findings and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design and quality assurance.
  • Risk Management & Troubleshooting: Ability to identify safety risks, troubleshoot potential issues, and work with engineering teams to resolve them.

  • This role is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in battery safety testing and regulatory compliance, looking to play a critical role in ensuring the safety and performance of next-generation Li-ion batteries in a product development environment.
  • This role is well-suited to an engineer with a degree or PhD in electrical, mechanical, chemical, materials or manufacturing engineering, with a focus on Li-ion battery technology and performance validation.
