Summary

The RhodeIsland Department of Health (RIDOH) requires anEnvironmental Technician. This position as assigned andin accordance with prescribed instructions andestablished standards will have the primary responsibility ofassisting public water systems in developing water service lineinventories to comply with the determined compliance date under theEnvironmental Protection Agencys Lead and Copper Rule Revisions(LCRR).

This position willwork under the supervision of a superior from whom instructions arereceived concerning policies and objectives. Work reports aresubject to review for adequacy and determination of remedial actionnecessary. Training on software platforms/webpage interface will beprovided.

Responsibilities

  • Review data and inventories submitted by water systems toensure that the submittals align with the data requirements of theState service line inventory database
  • Communicate with water systems on the status of inventorydevelopment
  • Conduct field visits andinspections as needed to review physical service line record filesand/or assist in the visual inspection of service lines
  • Develop periodic update reports on inventory metrics
  • Assist the Lead and Copper Rule Manager andthe inventory Project Manager to ensure that water systems areworking toward compliance with the deadline
  • Review inventory information submitted by the 176 RhodeIsland Public Water Systems (PWS) that are subject to the LCRR andthe Rhode Island Lead Poisoning and Prevention Act(LPPA)
  • Track customer notification and riskmitigation activities when lead pipes are discovered disturbed orreplaced
  • Perform other tasks as assigned bysupervisor

Knowledge Skill and Abilities

  • An interest in EnvironmentalScience/Engineering
  • An interest in protectingpublic health
  • A working knowledge of softwareplatforms such as Microsoft Office
  • Afamiliarity with state public health laws rules andregulations
  • Ability to prepare reportscontaining findings
  • Ability to establish andmaintain effective working relationships with associates superiorsand the public and other related capacities andabilities.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Such as may have been gainedthrough graduation from a college of recognized standing or acurrent student working toward a degree
  • Majorcourses in the Biological and Earth Sciences ChemistryEnvironmental or Civil Engineering or courses closely related toenvironmental science
  • Or any combination ofeducation and experience that shall be substantially equivalent tothe above education and experience
