TutorVista

2006 : Founded with $2MM funding

2011 : Sold to Pearson ( $15mn US/UK listed) for $213 MM valuation

On the way, we were featured 200 times in global media for our disruptive business model, we won innovation awards, we were taught as a case study in 7 B-Schools, were featured in the opening chapter of Prof. C.K. Prahlad's book, because India's largest employer of teachers and were named the coolest startup in India and had the largest trade sale exit for any VC funded firm.

But we didn't get here alone. The core team that made this happen consisted of the founders and a band of young MBAs from the top IIMs and XLRI who handled key management roles from the very early stages. Eventually they acted as quasi-entrepreneurs within the organization, running their own teams, taking their own risks and owning marketing, operations, product and strategy, creating immense value, making great money and having a ball on the way.

Who Are These Rock Stars?

Rashmi Daga - IIMA alum, joined TutorVista from J&J. She handled operations, tutor management, retention sales and customer service over three years and went on to become the COO at Bluestone (one of the #2 online jewelry companies in India) and is now holds a senior role at Ola Cabs.

Rahul Kedia - XLRI alum, joined TutorVista from GE Finance. He handled the entire online marketing team with spends over $1MM/month, made a few crores in options and now head's Flipkart's online marketing and manages many $ MM worth of marketing budget.

Arun Kumar - XLRI alum, joined from IBM. He handled almost all key functions in TutorVista, from sales, strategy, marketing to product management. He made a few crores on exit and c0-conceptualized the next venture of TutorVista founders - Portea Medical. Now he handles key consumer marketing, technology and product management as part of the core management at Portea Medical.

Rama Harinath – IIM Bangalore alum, joined TutorVista from Dell/HP. He handled substantial scale and operations in TutorVista . He currently heads the online business in Pearson as part of core management team and is also working on new startup as a co-founder.

Prakash Rengarajan – IIMB alum, joined Tutorvista from Microsoft. At TutorVista, he handled Product Management, new service launch and the Pearson-TutorVista relationships that was instrumental in the landmark deal. Post exit and monetization, he  has started new venture in retail food sector.

We are now looking for the next breed of management grads who can lead our new startups to success.

Portea Medical - Founded in July 2013, it is already the largest home healthcare company serving over 12 locations in India. It has been named as one of the top 4 startups to watch out for in 2014 by Forbes Magazine. It has raised $8MM in VC funding from Accel Partners and VentureEast. Portea has already scaled exponentially in India and will soon expand internationally. Over 600 employees are currently doing over 10,000 home visits a month

There are two other equally exciting ventures in the offing that are still in stealth mode and will be revealed in the months to come. These startups will raise Series A/B VC rounds.
