The Assistant Manager - Protobuild will spearhead the meticulous planning and execution of parts first-time right (FTR) inspections based on 2D drawings, ensuring adherence to established quality parameters. Responsibilities encompass managing the assembly and integration of aggregate modules such as the Drivetrain, DAC, and Battery Box, while overseeing the complete VP0 vehicle build cycle followed by rigorous build quality assessment. A thorough understanding and interpretation of 2D and 3D CAD models are essential, particularly focusing on sheet metal and plastic parts development to enhance design-for-manufacturability principles.
The role entails supervising and coordinating the activities of technicians, including organizing onsite visits to various manufacturing and prototyping facilities to provide build support and troubleshooting expertise. Critical planning of first-time go (FTG) processes aligned with project schedules forms a key part of responsibilities, supporting prototyping activities from inception to completion.
Developing comprehensive documentation such as process flow charts, Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Quality Control Plans, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for assembly and build processes is fundamental to ensuring process consistency and continuous improvement. The Assistant Manager will analyze assembly drawings and sequences, design and validate assembly and holding fixtures accommodating production line requirements, and generate Statements of Requirements (SOR) for assembly tools, end-of-line equipment, and measurement devices, securing stakeholder approvals throughout.
Budget preparation for prototyping and assembly equipment, coordination with external agencies and suppliers for quotations, and managing purchase requisitions in collaboration with the procurement team complete this multi-faceted role. Additionally, the incumbent will lead equipment installation and commissioning initiatives, ensuring seamless integration within production workflows and alignment with safety and operational standards.
ExperienceCandidates should possess between three to six years of progressive experience in manufacturing engineering or process engineering, preferably within automotive or tyre component manufacturing sectors. Prior involvement in vehicle prototyping or assembly operations is highly valuable, especially experience related to module assembly, fixture design, and quality control within a production or development setting.
Demonstrated capability in managing cross-functional teams and coordinating parallel activities in fast-paced environments is expected. Familiarity with interpreting and utilising 2D and 3D CAD data to drive manufacturing processes, coupled with hands-on experience in developing process documentation such as PFMEA and SOPs, will be crucial to success in this role.
Experience interfacing with suppliers and procurement units to source and manage equipment and tooling is preferred. Prior exposure to budgeting and cost control for manufacturing projects will be an added advantage. Proficiency in project planning and execution, alongside strong problem-solving skills related to build quality and process optimisation, are key attributes for this position.
Industry PreferredThe ideal candidate will have an educational and professional background within vehicle manufacturing companies or Tier 1 suppliers specializing in automotive components, with a strong foundation in manufacturing engineering and process engineering. Industries such as automotive assembly, drivetrain manufacturing, battery module production, and plastics or sheet metal fabrication for automotive applications are highly relevant.
Preference is given to professionals experienced in cutting-edge prototyping environments that combine engineering design with hands-on build and assembly processes. Exposure to suppliers or manufacturing partners in the automotive supply chain, including those focused on tooling, fixture design, and quality compliance, enhances candidacy.
QualificationsApplicants should hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BE or B.Tech) from an accredited institution. Academic credentials should reflect strong fundamentals in manufacturing processes, mechanical design, and quality control methodologies.
Additional certifications related to project management, quality assurance (such as Six Sigma), or CAD software expertise will be considered advantageous but are not mandatory. The role demands individuals who are adept at continuous learning and applying engineering principles to real-world manufacturing and prototyping challenges.
General RequirementsThe successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and collaborate with diverse teams including technicians, suppliers, and internal stakeholders. Strong organisational abilities are required to maintain adherence to project timelines and budgets while managing multiple workstreams simultaneously.
A problem-solving mindset complemented by attention to detail and a commitment to quality assurance is expected. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying potential issues during prototyping and assembly, with the ability to implement corrective actions efficiently.
Flexibility in adapting to the dynamic environment of vehicle prototyping and a willingness to support onsite visits as needed are essential. The Assistant Manager should also exhibit proficiency in standard office productivity and project management software to support documentation and reporting duties.
