Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Multi-State Payroll Manager to oversee and manage payroll operations across multiple U.S. states. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant processing of payroll while implementing best practices, maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and providing strategic leadership to the payroll team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end payroll process for multi-state employees, including exempt, non-exempt, and hourly staff.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Administer payroll in alignment with benefits, garnishments, bonuses, commissions, and other special pay programs.
- Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and year-end reporting (W-2, 1099, etc.).
- Serve as the subject matter expert on payroll regulations, staying up to date with legislative changes affecting multi-state payroll.
- Partner with HR, Finance, and Benefits teams to ensure accuracy in employee data, benefits deductions, and accounting entries.
- Manage payroll system upgrades, integrations, and enhancements with HRIS and financial systems.
- Develop and implement payroll policies, controls, and audit procedures to maintain data integrity.
- Respond to and resolve payroll inquiries from employees with a high level of customer service.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5-8+ years of payroll experience.
- Strong knowledge of multi-state payroll tax laws, wage & hour compliance, and labor regulations.
- Experience with HRIS/payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, Paycor, Paycom, or similar).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to manage confidential data with integrity and discretion.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working across departments and with employees.
