Role & responsibilities
Summary
The Stock Sales Trader serves as the critical link between institutional investment clients and the firm's trading desk. This role requires exceptional interpersonal skills to manage client relationships, deep market knowledge to provide actionable trading ideas, and the technical aptitude to ensure efficient and compliant execution of complex equity orders.
Key Responsibilities
Client Coverage and Relationship Management
Primary Client Contact: Act as the main point of contact for a designated group of institutional clients (e.g., portfolio managers, hedge fund traders).
- Relationship Building: Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships to understand client investment strategies and trading needs.
Marketing and Pitching: Proactively market the firm's equity products, research, and trading capabilities to clients to generate order flow.
Market Information and Advisory
Market Color: Provide clients with real-time, concise "market color"actionable market intelligence, news sentiment, technical levels, and insights on supply/demand dynamics.
- Trading Idea Generation: Collaborate with Research Analysts and Strategists to synthesize information and recommend timely, relevant trading ideas.
Execution Strategy: Advise clients on the optimal method (e.g., algorithmic, block trade, high-touch) and timing for executing their large, complex orders to minimize market impact.
Trade Execution Management
Order Flow Management: Receive and accurately relay client orders, often handling high-volume, time-sensitive instructions.
- Liaison: Effectively communicate with the internal Market-Making Traders and Trading Technology teams to ensure client orders are executed efficiently, achieving Best Execution at optimal prices.
Post-Trade Follow-up: Confirm trade details with clients and resolve any trade-related issues promptly.
Compliance and Risk
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all client interactions and trade activities strictly adhere to regulatory rules (e.g., FINRA, SEC) and internal risk guidelines.
- Risk Awareness: Monitor market conditions and client positions to flag potential risks to the internal risk management team and the client.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a quantitative field (e.g., Mathematics, Engineering). A Master's degree or CFA designation is a plus.
- Experience: Proven experience (typically 3-5+ years) in a Sales & Trading role, brokerage, or institutional finance.
