Job Title: Head -Legal (Mining & Iron Ore Industry)

Location: Odisha

Department: Legal & Compliance

Experience: Minimum years in legal roles, with at least years in mining (preferably iron ore)

Qualification: LLB/LLM from a reputed institution; Bar Council registration mandatory

Position Overview:

We are seeking a seasoned legal professional for our mining operations, with specific expertise in the iron ore sector. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing strategic legal counsel, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing litigation, and safeguarding the company's interests across all mining activities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Mining and Regulatory Compliance

  • Oversee compliance with MMDR Act, Mines Act, Environmental laws, Forest Conservation Act, Water & Air Act, Pollution Control Board regulations, and other applicable mining laws.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Mines, State Pollution Boards, IBM, DGMS, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Handle legal aspects of mining leases, renewals, permits, royalty disputes, and mineral transportation.

2. Contract Management

  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex contracts including:

  • Mine development and operations agreements

  • EPC contracts
  • Transportation and logistics contracts

  • Joint ventures and partnership agreements

  • Ensure contractual protections are in place for operational, commercial, and environmental risks.

3. Litigation & Dispute Resolution

  • Represent the company in litigation at various forums including High Courts, Tribunals (NGT, MMAT), and Supreme Court, when required.
  • Manage external legal counsel and monitor the progress of ongoing legal matters.
  • Proactively mitigate potential disputes with government authorities, contractors, landowners, and other stakeholders.

4. Land Acquisition & Local Governance

  • Handle legal aspects of land acquisition, rehabilitation & resettlement (R&R), and community engagement.
  • Engage with local authorities, Panchayats, and community leaders to resolve land and mining boundary issues.

Key Skills & Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of mining laws, environmental regulations, and contract law in India.
  • Strong litigation management and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to interface effectively with government bodies, judiciary, local communities, and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and decision-making abilities.
  • High integrity, ethics, and business acumen.

Preferred Background:

  • Prior experience as Legal Head or Senior Legal Counsel in a mining company (iron ore preferred).
  • Hands-on experience in mine start-up, expansion, or closure-related legal formalities.
  • Experience working in mining-intensive regions such as Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, or Karnataka is a plus.
