CCL Developer (Cerner Command Language Developer)

Job Summary:

The CCL Developer is a technical specialist focused on Cerners proprietary programming language, Cerner Command Language (CCL). This professional will design and develop custom scripts, reports, and data extracts within the Cerner Millennium environment. The CCL Developer works closely with clinical and business stakeholders to gather reporting and automation requirements, then translates these needs into efficient CCL code and SQL queries. The goal is to provide tailored solutions from clinical reports to batch jobs that enhance decision-making and workflow automation for healthcare clients. The CCL Developer will also ensure that custom code aligns with Cerner best practices and does not adversely impact system performance or upgradeability.

Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  • Develop and maintain custom CCL programs and reports within Cerner Millennium to meet client-specific needs, such as clinical quality dashboards, operational reports, and data extracts for regulatory compliance.
  • Write complex SQL queries (leveraging Cerners data model) to retrieve and manipulate data for reporting or integration purposes, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the output.
  • Optimize and troubleshoot existing CCL scripts and reports – fine-tune queries for performance, fix errors in logic, and update code following Cerner upgrades or changes in workflow.
  • Work with clinicians and department leads to gather requirements for new reports or automation scripts. Provide technical consultation on what data points are available and how best to present them, translating clinical needs into technical specifications.
  • Integrate CCL solutions into clinical workflows, for example by creating automated notifications, custom calculations, or workflow triggers (via Discern rules) that improve user efficiency.
  • Test all new or modified CCL programs in a non-production domain for correctness and performance impact. Coordinate user validation of report outputs to ensure they meet the intended requirements.
  • Support upgrades and new module implementations by reviewing and adjusting custom CCL content as needed so that it remains compatible with the latest Cerner Millennium code and data structures.
  • Document all custom solutions (technical design, usage instructions) and potentially mentor junior developers or power users in understanding and using CCL outputs, especially as part of knowledge transfer in a support model.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in Cerner CCL programming, including writing, debugging, and optimizing CCL scripts for reports and data extracts within Millennium.
  • Proficient in SQL and understanding of the Cerner Millennium data schema, enabling extraction of clinical and operational data accurately.
  • Familiarity with Cerner Discern Explorer and related tools (e.g., Bedrock for rules) to implement triggers or custom logic in the EMR, as well as integration of CCL with front-end (if needed for MPages or other custom applications).
  • Strong analytical abilities to translate end-user requirements into technical solutions, and to ensure data integrity and correctness in reports.
  • Experience with Cerner reporting tools beyond CCL is a plus – e.g., Discern Analytics 2.0 (DA2) or Cerner Command Language in batch job scheduling, as well as knowledge of BusinessObjects or other BI tools that interface with Cerner.
  • Good communication skills for collaborating with non-technical stakeholders; able to conduct requirements sessions and explain complex data findings in simple terms.
  • Cerner certification (Cerner Certified Professional) in a relevant domain or completion of Cerner CCL training modules is highly desirable, indicating validated expertise.
  • Prior experience in GCC/Middle East healthcare projects is strongly preferred – understanding regional reporting needs (e.g. Ministry of Health data submissions) and cultural context in data usage.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required
  • Ability to work during Gulf Standard Timeto synchronize with client teams. Proven track record supporting or implementing Cerner at Middle East.
  • Willingness to travel on-site when needed for critical project phases (e.g., go-live, intensive integration testing), while primarily delivering services remotely. Travel expenses will be covered by the company.
  • Comfortable in an offshore delivery environment: self-motivated and disciplined to deliver code remotely, with the flexibility to travel to client site in the Middle East on occasion if critical for requirements gathering or deployment support.
