The Senior Development Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and validation of automotive sheet metal components and systems, Such as Heavy Fabrication Truck , Busses and Commercial Vehicle Parts. This role serves as a key liaison between the company, suppliers, and automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), ensuring that product development meets stringent quality, cost, and timeline targets. The ideal candidate will mentor junior engineers and drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

Product development and design

  • Lead the entire product development process for complex sheet metal components, from concept creation to mass production.
  • Utilize advanced CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo) to design 3D models and detailed 2D technical drawings of sheet metal parts.
  • Conduct and oversee engineering simulations and analyses, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and formability studies, to validate design integrity and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Apply expertise in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) to optimize designs for production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Supplier management and quality assurance

  • Act as the primary technical contact for suppliers, guiding them on material selection, process optimization, and product functionality.
  • Lead the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) activities to ensure new parts meet all quality and performance standards.
  • Conduct regular supplier audits and on-site visits to review manufacturing processes, verify corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Analyze and resolve supplier quality issues, performing root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

Project and team leadership

  • Plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring all engineering milestones and deliverables are met on time and within budget.
  • Liaise with cross-functional teams, including purchasing, quality assurance, and manufacturing, to resolve issues and optimize the development process.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
  • Report on key project metrics and present progress updates to senior management and customers.

Continuous improvement and innovation

  • Monitor new automotive technologies, competitor trends, and market requirements to identify and implement development opportunities.
  • Promote Lean and Six Sigma methodologies within the supply chain to minimize variation and waste.
  • Drive cost-reduction and value engineering (VAVE) initiatives by identifying alternative materials and manufacturing methods.
