Job Title: Subject Meter Expert – Mechanical

Department: Data Center

Location: Mumbai

Reports to: Head DC Operations

Position Type: Full Time

Key Responsibilities –

Mechanical System Management:

  1. Manage and oversee all mechanical systems within the data center, including HVAC, cooling systems, chillers, and related infrastructure.
  2. Ensure 24/7 uptime of cooling and environmental control systems to maintain optimal operating conditions for servers and networking equipment.
  3. Work with Facilities Assistant/Manager providing a yearly comprehensive periodic maintenance regime.
  4. Inspect buildings, grounds and equipment for unsafe or malfunctioning conditions.
  5. Troubleshoot, evaluate and recommend system upgrades.

Capacity Planning and Optimization:

  1. Conduct capacity planning to ensure the data center's mechanical infrastructure can support current and future IT equipment loads.
  2. Identify and implement efficiency improvements to optimize cooling systems and reduce energy consumption.

Maintenance and Repairs:

  1. Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs for mechanical equipment, working closely with vendors and contractors.
  2. Respond promptly to equipment failures, ensuring minimal impact on data center operations.
  3. Author or approve work procedures to cover electrical troubleshooting, repair, retrofit, and maintenance activities, with an emphasis on assessing & mitigating personnel and system risk.
  4. Conduct or oversee hands-on troubleshooting, repair, retrofit, and maintenance of electrical equipment

Compliance and Standards:

  1. Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations related to data center mechanical systems.
  2. Maintain accurate documentation and records for auditing purposes.
  3. Develop and keep up to date all site electrical procedures including EOPs, SOPs and MOPs. All documentation should be consistent with current client standards.

Emergency Response:

  1. Develop and implement emergency response plans for mechanical system failures, including contingency measures and disaster recovery procedures.

Vendor Management:

  1. Collaborate with equipment suppliers, contractors, and service providers to maintain and upgrade mechanical systems.
  2. Negotiate contracts and manage vendor relationships effectively.

Training and Knowledge Sharing:

  1. Provide training and guidance to data center staff on mechanical systems, best practices, and safety protocols.
  2. Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in data center cooling and mechanical infrastructure.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field; a Master's degree may be preferred.
  2. Extensive experience (typically 12+ years) in managing mechanical systems in a data center environment.
  3. Strong knowledge of data center cooling and HVAC systems, including precision air conditioning units and CRAC/CRAH units.
  4. Familiarity with energy-efficient cooling solutions and environmental monitoring systems.
  5. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, 24/7 data center environment.
  7. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  8. Experience with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools.
  9. Certification in data center design or operations (e.g., CDCDP, CDCMP, or CDCS).
  10. Knowledge of sustainable and green data center practices.
  11. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with the client and with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on the data center systems.
