Role Description:

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Mechanical Head – Steel Melting Shop (SMS) based in Hyderabad. The Mechanical Head will oversee and coordinate all mechanical operations and maintenance activities to ensure efficient functioning of the Steel Melting Shop. Responsibilities include planning and executing maintenance schedules, supervising equipment inspections, ensuring compliance with mechanical engineering standards, and identifying areas for process improvement. The Mechanical Head will work closely with the operations team to solve technical challenges and optimize performance.

Job Summary

The SMS Mechanical Maintenance Head
is responsible for planning, managing, and controlling all mechanical maintenance activities for the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) to ensure maximum equipment availability, reliability, and production efficiency. The role involves leading preventive, predictive, and shutdown maintenance, developing systems to reduce downtime, and ensuring technical excellence and safe work execution across the plant.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Mechanical Maintenance & Reliability

Ø Develop and execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance strategies for SMS mechanical equipment.

Ø Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and minimize downtime for key equipment

such as:

a)Furnaces (Induction / Arc Furnaces)

b)Cranes and lifting equipment

c)Casting machines, hydraulics, and lubrication systems

d)Conduct
root cause analysis (RCA)
for repeated failures and implement corrective actions.

2. Equipment & Asset Management

Ø Prepare maintenance plans for major shutdowns and overhauling.

Ø Ensure timely availability of critical spares, consumables, and mechanical components.

Ø Maintain equipment lifecycle records, maintenance history, and performance KPIs.

3. Team Leadership & Development

Ø Lead, train, and mentor a team of engineers, supervisors, technicians, and support staff.

Ø Build a high-performing maintenance culture focused on discipline, ownership, teamwork, and accountability.

Ø Ensure adherence to safe work procedures and mandatory PPE usage.

4. Project & Upgrade Management

Ø Coordinate an lead mechanical installation, commissioning, plant expansion, and modernization projects.

Ø Review and understand mechanical drawings, P&ID, AutoCAD/Solid modelling documentation.

Ø Improve production capability through cost-saving upgrades and process improvement.

5. Cost & Inventory Control

Ø Prepare, monitor, and control maintenance budgets including:

a)Spare parts

b)Consumables

c)External services

Ø Identify cost-saving and energy-efficient initiatives without affecting equipment life or production.

6. Safety, Compliance & Standards

Ø Ensure compliance with plant and legal safety norms, PPE compliance, and LOTO practices.

Ø Promote 5S, TPM, IMS, and Kaizen
culture across mechanical maintenance.

Ø Support environmental compliance and statutory audits.

7. Interdepartmental Coordination

Ø Coordinate closely with Production, Electrical, Automation, and Quality teams to ensure uninterrupted plant operations.

Ø Provide daily/weekly performance MIS reports to higher management.

Technical Skills Required

Ø Expertise in mechanical systems used in SMS, including:

a)Furnaces coils and lining systems

b)Casting machines and mould oscillators

c)Cranes, hoists, gearboxes, bearings, and lubrication systems

d)Hydraulic & pneumatic systems

e)Cooling water systems and pumps

Ø Knowledge of:

a)Failure analysis, vibration analysis, condition monitoring

b)Safety interlocks & shutdown sequences

c)Refractory and furnace reliability improvement

Ø Working knowledge of:

a)ERP/CMMS-based maintenance tracking

b)AutoCAD, engineering software tools, MS Office
