Quality Control Lab Chemist

Lab Chemist - Quality Control & Testing (Activated Carbon Plant)

**Company Overview**:
**Position Summary**:
We are looking for a **Lab Chemist** to join our Quality Control & R&D team at Carbonmax. The role involves conducting routine and advanced chemical/physical tests on activated carbon samples, ensuring compliance with ASTM, AWWA, JIS, and customer-specific standards. The Lab Chemist will support product development, troubleshoot customer complaints, and maintain accurate records for certifications and audits.

**Key Responsibilities**

**Quality Assurance - Testing & Analysis**
- Conduct physical and chemical testing of activated carbon including:

- Iodine Number, Molasses Number, CTC adsorption
- Apparent Density, Hardness, Moisture, Ash, pH
- Gold adsorption (K value, R value) for mining carbons
- Perform acid/base washing leachability tests, heavy metal analysis, and trace element checks.
- Carry out particle size distribution using sieving (WS Tyler) and laser particle size analyzer.
- Operate QA instruments such as Shimadzu balances, pH/conductivity meters, turbidity meters, and Malvern PSA.

**Compliance & Documentation**
- Maintain proper test records as per ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 17025, REACH and customer audit requirements.
- Prepare Certificates of Analysis (COA) for each production batch.
- Support NABL accreditation documentation and inter-lab comparison studies.

**R&D & Value-Added Products**
- Assist in trial tests for acid-washed carbon, catalytic carbon, PAC, impregnated carbons.
- Conduct comparative analysis with competitor samples and report performance deviations.

**Laboratory Management & Safety**
- Calibrate and maintain lab instruments regularly.
- Monitor chemical stock levels (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, NaOH, AgNO3, KI, etc.) and ensure safe handling.
- Follow laboratory safety practices and EHS guidelines.
- Train and mentor lab assistants/technicians in sample preparation, analysis, and documentation.

**Eligibility Criteria**

**Qualification**:

- M.Sc. in Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Industrial Chemistry
- Diploma in Chemical Technology may be considered with strong testing experience

**Experience**:

- Fresher to 2 years in industrial quality control / testing laboratory, preferably in:

- Activated Carbon / Carbon Black / Chemicals / Minerals / Adsorbents
- Experience with ASTM/AWWA/JIS test standards is an advantage.

**Technical Skills**:

- Hands-on lab equipment operation & calibration
- QA/QC methods for physical & chemical parameters
- MS Excel / ERP entry of test reports
- Report writing and analytical interpretation

**Language**:

- Tamil (mandatory), English (required), Hindi (preferred)

**Software Skills**:

- ERP / LIMS / MS Excel for QA reporting
- Familiarity with ISO/NABL documentation preferred

**Key Competencies**

Ponnapuram, Dharapuram Taluk: Should be willing to relocate or commute reliably. Factory accommodation will be supported if required.

**Education**:

- Master’s in Chemistry (preferred)

**Experience**:

- Laboratory Testing & QC: Fresher to 2 Years (preferred)
