**Job Summary**:
The Journal Acquisition Manager is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and acquiring high-quality academic journals and other scholarly publications to expand the company’s portfolio. This role requires a deep understanding of the academic publishing landscape, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to build long-term relationships with editors, societies, and institutions.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Market Research & Identification**:
- Conduct market research to identify potential journals and emerging trends in various academic fields.
- Identify gaps in the current portfolio and assess new opportunities for journal acquisition.
- Monitor competitor activities and emerging technologies in academic publishing.
- **Outreach & Relationship Building**:
- Build and maintain relationships with journal editors, academic societies, and institutions.
- Attend academic conferences and networking events to represent the organization and acquire new leads.
- Develop proposals for acquisition and collaborate with internal teams to present acquisition offers.
- **Journal Evaluation**:
- Assess the quality and market potential of prospective journals based on their editorial board, impact factor, citation metrics, and relevance in their field.
- Conduct due diligence on journals, including their operational structure, peer review process, and ethical standards.
- **Negotiation & Acquisition**:
- Negotiate terms and agreements with journal editors, societies, and institutions for the acquisition or partnership of new journals.
- Prepare acquisition contracts and ensure compliance with industry standards and organizational policies.
- Work closely with legal and financial teams to finalize agreements.
- **Portfolio Management**:
- Assist in the smooth onboarding of new journals, ensuring they integrate well into the company’s existing processes and systems.
- Collaborate with editorial, production, and marketing teams to develop growth strategies for acquired journals.
- Monitor the performance of newly acquired journals and provide insights to improve their market position and visibility.
- **Strategic Planning**:
- Contribute to the strategic planning process by identifying long-term growth opportunities and developing acquisition strategies aligned with business goals.
- Prepare regular reports on acquisition activities, journal performance, and market trends for senior management.
- **Cross-functional Collaboration**:
- Work closely with editorial, production, and marketing teams to ensure a seamless transition of newly acquired journals into the company’s portfolio.
- Provide support for business development, product management, and content marketing initiatives related to journal acquisition.
**Requirements**:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Publishing, Business, Marketing, or a related area); a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in journal acquisition, academic publishing, or a similar role.
- Strong understanding of the academic publishing industry, including peer review processes, impact factors, and citation metrics.
- Proven track record of successful journal acquisition or business development.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel for conferences, meetings, and events.
**Preferred Skills**:
- Knowledge of Open Access publishing and current industry trends.
- Experience in working with academic societies or research institutions.
- Familiarity with publishing platforms and technologies.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate journal metrics and performance.
