The Pastry and Bakery Commis 1 assists in the preparation and production of pastries, bread, and other baked goods under the guidance of a pastry chef or head baker. They are responsible for executing tasks such as ingredient preparation, mixing, baking, and finishing baked goods according to recipes and standards.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Ingredient Preparation**:
- Measure and weigh ingredients accurately.
- Prepare ingredients such as dough, batter, fillings, and toppings according to recipes.
- **Baking and Cooking**:
- Assist in baking a variety of pastries, bread, cakes, and desserts.
- Monitor oven temperatures and baking times to ensure proper cooking.
- **Pastry Production**:
- Shape dough, roll out pastry, and cut shapes for various baked goods.
- Decorate and finish baked items with glazes, icing, or toppings as per instructions.
- **Quality Control**:
- Maintain high standards of quality and presentation for all baked goods.
- Inspect finished products for consistency, taste, and appearance.
- **Sanitation and Cleanliness**:
- Adhere to proper food safety and sanitation guidelines.
- Keep work areas, equipment, and utensils clean and organized.
- **Inventory Management**:
- Assist in monitoring inventory levels of ingredients and supplies.
- Notify supervisors of low stock levels or expired ingredients.
- **Team Collaboration**:
- Work closely with other members of the pastry team to ensure efficient operations.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.
**Qualifications**:
- Previous experience in a pastry or bakery role is preferred.
- Knowledge of basic baking techniques, ingredients, and equipment.
- Ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and precision.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills in pastry and bakery.
**Physical Requirements**:
- Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Comfortable working in a hot and fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Capable of lifting heavy objects and moving equipment as needed.
**Education**:
- High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
- Culinary or pastry arts education or training is a plus.
