The Software Asset Management (SAM) role is a key position within our organization, responsible for ensuring effective management of software assets across the estate. This involves developing and implementing strategies to optimize software utilization, reduce costs, and improve compliance with licensing agreements.
Key Responsibilities- To assist in the development of all related SAM activities, including monthly data management, Effective License Position (ELP) creation, audit defence, contract review, risk analysis, reporting, and tool administration.
- Lead in delivering reports to senior management, taking responsibility for the successful delivery of assigned tasks.
- Manage vendor audits and key vendor reviews, utilizing in-depth knowledge of major Tier 1 vendors such as Oracle, VMware, IBM, Microsoft, Red Hat, etc.
- PARTICIPATE IN regular calls with project, operational departments, vendors, and senior management to ensure adherence to licensing requirements and mitigate risk.
- Assist in defining service and developing/reviewing process, governance standards, and foundational documentation.
- Manage data verification and analysis across multiple data sources and types, producing clear reporting.
- Analyze licensing requirements, gather and analyze data, recommend solutions, and mitigate activities.
- Prepare ELP reports across multiple vendors.
- Analyze and produce licensing impact reports for significant migrations or changes related to Data Centre, virtualisation, cloud, or software deployment.
- Support the development of new tooling (Central Software Repository, Request Tooling, Dashboard Reporting) to support key goals and associated requirements to mature tools and collect, analyze, cleanse, and reconcile associated data.
- Collaborate with the development team to ensure products being developed align with team goals.
- PARTICIPATE IN sprint management calls and support the sprint process in being visible, up-to-date, and managed to the benefit of end goals set out for the new strategy.
- Identify opportunities for continual internal process improvement.
- 8-14 years of IT experience with 3-5 years of proven experience managing and implementing Software Asset Management or related IT discipline.
- Understanding of license metrics (e.g., core, processor, user).
- Experience with Tier 1 or 2 Publisher licensing metrics, data collection, and ELP creation, including Tier 1 product lines and multiple licensing models.
- Analytics skills - ability to work through dry documentation and spreadsheets, extracting key information, analyzing, and modeling.
- H hardware analysis knowledge - awareness of the importance of hardware devices (e.g., client endpoints, server endpoints, virtualization, mobile devices, BYOD, etc.) and ability to utilize data in a commercially useful manner.
- Contract/EULA analysis understanding - awareness or working knowledge of asset-related contract, financial, and procurement terminology and SAM-related language.
- Discovery tool experience (e.g., Microsoft SCCM, ADDM, Microsoft MAP, Active Directory, ePO).
- Licence Management tool experience (e.g., Flexera FNMS, ServiceNow SAM Pro, Snow Software).
- Knowledge of cloud and virtualization and its impacts for ITAM - Citrix, VMware, Oracle.
- Analytical abilities, including excellent Excel skills.
- Continuously update skillset by learning new vendor licensing rules, product usage rights, and educating junior licensing teams on architecture and complex licensing.
- Good presentation skills, both in reporting and presenting in person.
- Agile mindset.
