Senior Reliability Engineer

Achieve exceptional system reliability and performance by defining standards, leading high-impact projects, and mentoring engineers.

  • Create customer-centric SLIs/SLOs for critical services. Establish, review, and align teams with quarterly goals.
  • Implement a robust error-budget policy with multi-window alerts; maintain clear runbooks and paging thresholds.
  • Evaluate changes based on budget status (freeze/relax rules) integrated into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop and maintain SLO/EB dashboards (Azure Monitor, Grafana/Prometheus, App Insights). Conduct weekly reviews with engineering/product teams.
  • Drive strategic tradeoffs when budgets are at risk; deliver reliability-focused initiatives.
  • Calmly handle incidents: Lead SEV1/SEV2, own comms, run blameless postmortems, and enforce corrective actions.
  • Engineer resilience in: Multi-AZ/region patterns (active-active/DR), PDBs/Pod Topology Spread, HPA/VPA/KEDA, reliable rollout/rollback.
  • Optimize AKS at scale: Harden clusters (network, identity, policy), optimize node/pod density, ingress (AGIC/Nginx); mesh optional.
  • Promote observability: Metrics/traces/logs with Azure Monitor/App Insights, Log Analytics, Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry. Alert on symptoms, not noise.
  • Maintain IaC & policy: Terraform/Bicep modules, GitOps (Flux/Argo), policy-as-code (Azure Policy/OPA Gatekeeper). Eliminate snowflakes.
  • Ensure CI/CD reliability: Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions with canary/blue-green, progressive delivery, auto-rollback, Key Vault-backed secrets.
  • Manage capacity & performance: Load testing, right-sizing, autoscaling; collaborate with FinOps to reduce spend without impacting SLOs.
  • Develop DR strategy: Define RTO/RPO, test backups/restore, run game days/chaos drills, validate ASR and multi-region failover.
  • Safeguard data security: Entra ID (Azure AD), managed identities, Key Vault rotation, VNets/NSGs/Private Link, shift-left checks in CI.
  • Minimize toil: Automate recurring ops, build self-service runbooks/chatops, publish golden paths for product teams.
  • Handle customer escalations: Be the technical owner on calls; communicate tradeoffs and recovery plans with authority.
  • Document knowledge: Architectures, runbooks, postmortems, SLIs/SLOs—kept current and discoverable.
