Medical Coding Specialist

  • A Medical Coding Specialist analyzes and reviews medical records to assign accurate codes. They must ensure adherence to coding guidelines, maintain accuracy and productivity standards, and collaborate with QA teams for continuous quality improvement.
  • They stay updated with current coding updates, payer policies, and CMS regulations, ensuring HIPAA compliance and maintaining confidentiality.
  • The specialist assigns E/M codes for office visits, consultations, ER visits, and telehealth services, interpreting documentation and applying 2021 E/M Guidelines.
  • They code operative reports across specialties, understanding bundling, modifier usage, and NCCI edits, validating procedure codes against clinical documentation.
  • Additionally, they assign DRGs based on the principal diagnosis, procedures, and comorbidities, applying MS-DRG and APR-DRG grouping methodologies, and identifying POA indicators and querying when needed.
">Requirements:
  • Education: Graduate in Life Sciences, Paramedical, or Allied Health fields.
  • Certifications: CPC, CCS, or COC (AAPC or AHIMA) are mandatory, while CIC (for IPDRG), CGIC, CPMA, or specialty credentials are preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1–5 years in respective coding specialties (E/M, Surgery, or Inpatient).

Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems like Epic, Cerner, or Meditech, and coding software such as 3M, TruCode, or Optum Encoder is essential for this role.

  • Accuracy: ≥ 95% (based on QA audits)
  • Productivity: Specialty-based benchmarks (e.g., charts/hour or cases/day)
  • Compliance: Zero PHI breaches; adherence to internal SLAs
