Database Administrator Role

The role of the database administrator is to design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable, and highly available database solutions. This includes monitoring and optimizing database performance through indexing, query tuning, and storage management.

Key responsibilities include leading database capacity planning, disaster recovery strategy, and backup/restore processes. Implementing and enforcing database security controls including encryption, access controls, and auditing is also crucial.

Collaboration with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to support software releases and schema changes is necessary. Automating routine database operations using scripting and infrastructure-as-code tools is beneficial.

Managing and troubleshooting replication, clustering, and failover configurations is also a key responsibility.

Maintaining documentation, procedures, and standards for database systems is essential. Evaluating new database technologies and making recommendations for adoption is also required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, design, and performance tuning.
  • Expertise in SQL Server, with working knowledge of other RDBMS (PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL).
  • Strong proficiency in T-SQL, stored procedures, and performance analysis tools.
  • Experience with HA/DR solutions (e.g., AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Replication).
  • Solid understanding of database security, compliance (e.g., PII, PCI), and role-based access control.
  • Proficient in automation scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python, or Bash).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and integrating DB changes into DevOps workflows.
  • Experience in cloud-based database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS) is a strong plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Experience with database monitoring tools (e.g., Redgate, SolarWinds) preferred.
  • Knowledge of NoSQL systems (e.g., Cosmos DB, MongoDB, Redis) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements in the financial services industry.
