Job Title: Environmental Modelling Specialist

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled environmental modeller with advanced programming expertise to develop, implement and maintain components of an ecosystem model using Python.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Python programming for data science and environmental modelling, including proficiency with scientific libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, scikit-learn and GeoPandas. They should also have proven experience developing and working with ecosystem models or related areas, as well as experience with machine learning techniques and their application to environmental data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Model Components & Integration: Develop and integrate various model components, including plant growth models, soil organic carbon models, soil water models, mineral nitrogen models and grazing models.
  • Technical Development: Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Bayesian data assimilation framework that underpins the model, ensuring robust uncertainty quantification and model calibration.
  • Machine Learning Integration: Evaluate and implement machine learning and statistical models using Python libraries to enhance overall accuracy and predictive power.
  • Code Quality & Collaboration: Ensure all modelling code meets high standards for reliability, performance and maintainability, with comprehensive testing and documentation.

Requirements:

  • Advanced Programming Skills: Extensive experience in Python programming for data science and environmental modelling.
  • Environmental Modelling Experience: Proven experience developing and working with ecosystem models or related areas.
  • Data Science Proficiency: Extensive experience with machine learning techniques and their application to environmental data.
  • Code Quality Focus: Experience with software development best practices, including version control, testing frameworks and code documentation.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Bayesian methods and data assimilation frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Soil carbon models and crop growth models.
  • Knowledge of nitrogen cycling and soil-plant-atmosphere interactions.
