UAV Design Engineer Job Overview

The role of UAV design engineer involves designing and developing fixed-wing and VTOL UAV platforms from concept to prototype and production.

  1. Lead the conceptual and detailed design of UAV airframes and subsystems.
  2. Conduct aerodynamic analysis and optimization of UAV configurations.
  3. Design structural components and assemblies using advanced composite and lightweight materials.
  4. Develop detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  5. Collaborate with electronics, propulsion, and software teams to ensure seamless system integration.
  6. Perform structural and thermal analysis (FEA, CFD) to validate design performance.
  7. Participate in UAV prototyping, assembly, ground testing, and flight trials.
  8. Document design processes, BOMs, and support regulatory compliance for airworthiness.
  9. Stay updated on emerging technologies, materials, and design methodologies in UAV systems.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in UAV or aircraft design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, and structural design.
  • Experience with composite materials and UAV fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and manufacturing processes.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience designing VTOL, hybrid, or long-endurance UAV platforms.
  • Familiarity with autopilot systems and avionics integration is beneficial.
  • Exposure to regulatory frameworks (DGCA, FAA Part 107, etc.).
  • Knowledge of electric propulsion systems and battery technologies.
