Electrolyte Scientist Job Description

The Electrolyte Scientist plays a pivotal role in driving cutting-edge research and development focused on advanced materials and research and development of electrolyte formulations for Li-ion batteries. This position requires an individual with expertise in next-generation, high-performance technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct experiments to formulate electrolytes that enhance performance for lithium-ion battery applications.
  • Develop new electrolyte formulations, screen, and benchmark them for lithium-ion batteries as per cell design requirements.
  • Analyze and characterize the composition of electrolyte formulations.
  • Conduct electrical/electrochemical performance measurements to evaluate the performance at both component and cell levels.
  • Support R&D initiatives to create prototypes for next-gen cells, integrating advanced materials and innovative designs into lab-scale trials.
  • Lead and mentor junior team members, providing technical consultation to cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborate with global team members to drive product development as per cell deliverables.
  • Analyze test results, interpret data trends, and contribute to electrolyte optimization and improved cell architecture for enhanced performance.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion batteries and electrolyte formulation chemistry, particularly in designing formulations with performance-oriented factors like cycle performance, high temperatures, and ageing studies.
  • Hands-on experience in wet chemistry and synthesis, characterization, and testing of commercial lithium-ion battery materials.
  • Proficiency in materials characterization (XRD, PSA, FTIR, ICP-OES, GCMS, ICMS, RAMAN, KF, XPS, etc.) and cell testing methodologies, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and precision in experimental design and analysis of results.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Dexterity to handle delicate battery components and laboratory equipment.
  • Able to physically operate scientific equipment and instruments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and present technical findings clearly.

Role-Specific Requirements:

  • PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related scientific discipline with minimum 2-4 years of industrial experience in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in battery materials for lithium-ion batteries.
  • Deep knowledge and hands-on experience in electrode material synthesis, from wet chemistry to gas-solid/solid-solid high-temperature processes.
