Job Description:

The role of Import Ocean Freight Manager involves overseeing the import ocean freight operations for FCL, LCL, and consolidation. This includes developing pricing strategies, negotiating rates with carriers, and maintaining strong relationships with shipping lines, co-loaders, and overseas agents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management
    • Direct and manage a team to lead and manage import ocean freight operations for various types of cargo.
  • Pricing Strategies & Negotiations
    • Formulate and implement effective pricing strategies to optimize revenue and negotiate rates with carriers to achieve cost savings.
  • Operational Efficiency
    • Oversee pre-alerts, booking coordination, documentation, customs compliance, and end-to-end import shipment handling to ensure timely and accurate processing.
    • Collaborate with internal departments (sales, documentation, customer service, and finance) to ensure smooth cargo clearance and delivery.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with all local and international import regulations, customs laws, and trade compliance requirements to minimize risks and avoid penalties.
  • Process Improvements
    • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround time for import processes.
  • Team Management
    • Manage and mentor the import operations team – allocate resources, set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), monitor performance, and provide ongoing training to ensure team members are equipped to perform their duties effectively.
  • Financial Management
    • Monitor departmental profit and loss (P&L) statements to ensure cost control and prepare regular budgets to maintain financial stability.
  • Business Development
    • Collaborate with the sales and business development teams to identify new opportunities and grow the import customer base through strategic planning and relationship-building.
  • Customer Service
    • Maintain high standards of customer service, promptly resolving issues and ensuring consistent client satisfaction through proactive communication and issue resolution.
  • Reporting & Analytics
    • Generate regular management information systems (MIS) reports for senior management on import operations, cost efficiency, and process improvements to inform strategic decision-making.

Required Skills & Experience:

Strong knowledge of international import practices, customs clearance procedures, documentation, and INCOTERMS is essential for this role.

Excellent leadership and people management abilities are required to direct and motivate the import operations team.

Strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills are necessary to develop and implement effective pricing strategies, negotiate rates with carriers, and maintain strong relationships with shipping lines, co-loaders, and overseas agents.
