Job Overview

We're seeking a skilled Backend Architect to join our team. This role involves designing and building scalable backend systems, APIs, and integrations that power our consumer and partner experiences.

About the Role
  • Design and develop high-performance backend components, APIs, and integrations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect data flows across various systems.
  • Implement secure authentication mechanisms using industry-standard protocols (Auth0, OAuth2, OIDC, JWT).
  • Develop search and ranking capabilities using OpenAI, Azure, or other external services.
  • Set up monitoring and observability tools (OpenTelemetry, dashboards, SLOs) to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Stay up-to-date with data regulations (GDPR and others) and build systems that comply with these standards.
  • Containerize solutions for scalability and compute flexibility using Docker/K8s/serverless environments.
  • Write adapters, contract tests, and manage schema diffs for evolving systems.
  • Collaborate with product and science leads to design and implement AI-powered interfaces (chat and recommendation layers).
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in backend engineering and system architecture.
  • Strong grasp of data flows, infrastructure, and integration patterns.
  • Proficiency with REST APIs, backend/frontend integration, and secrets hygiene.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, caching, object storage, and streaming systems.
  • Experience with containerisation, serverless environments, CDNs, and WAFs.
  • Understanding of hybrid/vector search and ranking approaches.
  • Working knowledge of PII/PHI/GDPR handling in production systems.
  • Experience with data modelling, ML pipelines, or applied machine learning in production systems.
  • Analytical thinker who can work independently and thrives on collaboration.
