Position: Assistant Manager - Payroll

Industry: Education

Location: Chembur

Working: Hybrid (4 days from office / 2 days from home)

CTC: Rs. 6 to Rs. 6.5 lacs per annum

About the Role:

We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Manager Payroll to lead our payroll operations and ensure smooth, accurate, and compliant payroll processing. This is a critical role that involves managing end-to-end payroll processes, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

End-to-End Payroll Management

- Develop and manage systems to process payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, deductions, taxes, garnishments, and third-party payments.
- Coordinate timekeeping and payroll systems to ensure timely and accurate processing.
- Change Management & System Administration
- Oversee processing of payroll changes such as new hires, exits, promotions, increments, and system updates.
- Work closely with IT / HRMS teams for payroll system improvements and upgrades.

Compliance & Audit

- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant labor laws, tax regulations, and internal policies.
- Liaise with internal and external auditors; lead and manage payroll tax audits.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory changes and update processes accordingly.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Partner closely with HR for employee data accuracy and with Finance/Accounts for payroll reconciliations and reporting.
- Provide timely and accurate payroll reports to management and other stakeholders.

Issue Resolution & Employee Support

- Address payroll-related queries and resolve discrepancies promptly and professionally.
- Act as the primary escalation point for payroll issues.

Team Leadership & Governance

- Supervise, mentor, and develop members of the payroll team.
- Standardize payroll procedures to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance across the function.

Key Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, or related field (MBA/PG preferred).
- Min 5 years of experience in payroll processing and compliance, preferably in a multi-location setup.
- Strong knowledge of statutory laws (PF, ESI, Gratuity, Professional Tax, Income Tax, etc.) and payroll regulations.
- Hands-on experience with payroll software / HRMS systems.
- Proven ability to manage audits and statutory inspections.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and communication skills.
- Team management or supervisory experience preferred.
