Key ResponsibilitiesA. Patient Assessment & Monitoring
  • Perform initial and daily assessments of critically ill patients.

  • Conduct comprehensive histories, physical exams, and focused ICU evaluations.

  • Interpret vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, arterial blood gases, ventilator settings, and monitoring data.

  • Recognize clinical deterioration and notify attending physicians promptly.

B. Clinical Management
  • Assist in developing and implementing treatment plans for patients with respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, postoperative complications, trauma, and other critical conditions.

  • Manage medications including vasopressors, sedatives, analgesics, antibiotics, diuretics, and anticoagulants under supervision and protocols.

  • Adjust ventilator settings based on protocols and patient needs (if credentialed).

C. ICU Procedures (as permitted by credentialing)
  • Perform or assist with common ICU procedures, including:

    • Central and arterial line insertion

    • Intubation and airway management

    • Chest tube insertion

    • Lumbar puncture

    • Paracentesis and thoracentesis

    • Bedside ultrasound for procedural guidance

    • Ventilator weaning trials

  • Provide post-procedure monitoring and documentation.

D. Emergency Response
  • Respond to rapid response calls, code blues, and airway emergencies.

  • Participate in sepsis alerts and shock resuscitation protocols.

  • Assist with stabilization and triage of incoming critical care admissions.

E. Documentation & Care Coordination
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Coordinate care with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, nutrition, social work, and consulting specialties.

  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care plans.

  • Assist in discharge planning, family meetings, and handoffs.

F. Quality, Compliance & Education
  • Adhere to ICU protocols, hospital policies, and evidence-based care guidelines (e.g., sepsis bundles, sedation protocols, ventilator bundles).

  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, quality improvement projects, and clinical audits.

  • Engage in continuing education in critical care medicine.

  • Provide education to residents, nurses, and support staff as required.
