Job Description – Civil/Structural Design Engineer (Solar PV)

Position: Civil/Structural Design Engineer

Project Types: Ground-mounted & Rooftop Solar PV (Small scale to Mega Utility Scale)

Key Responsibilities

Design & Analysis


• Develop and validate design basis reports for civil and structural works.


• Perform structural analysis and design of module mounting structures (fixed, tracker, rooftop), foundations, inverter/transformer plinths, fencing, roads, drainage, and ancillary civil works.


• Ensure designs comply with relevant codes: IS (India), SANS (South Africa), and international standards as required.


• Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and specifications for IFC (Issued for Construction).

Geotechnical & Foundations


• Review and interpret geotechnical reports; recommend suitable foundations (pile, pad, screw, raft, ballasted).


• Plan and support field tests (pile pull-out, proof load, soil compaction).


• Optimize foundation systems for cost, constructability, and long-term performance.

Site Development & Civil Works


• Prepare grading and drainage designs, stormwater management, and road layouts.


• Review rooftop structural capacities and recommend suitable mounting solutions (penetrative vs. ballasted).


• Address local risks (black cotton soils, dolomite, collapsible sands, cyclone winds, flooding).

Coordination & Documentation


• Interface with electrical, mechanical, geotechnical, and HSE teams to resolve design clashes.


• Review vendor/OEM drawings for compliance.


• Issue design deliverables: drawings, BOM/BOQ, method statements, ITPs, and as-built records.

Construction & QA/QC Support


• Provide site support, respond to RFIs, review shop drawings, and approve design deviations.


• Conduct inspections for civil/structural works, pile driving, concrete pouring, and steel fabrication.


• Ensure HSE considerations (safe access, maintenance pathways, waterproofing for rooftops).

Compliance & Permitting


• Ensure designs meet environmental, fire, municipal, and utility regulations in India and South Africa.


• Maintain a Code Compliance Matrix for each project.

Level Differentiation


• Junior Engineer (0–3 yrs): Focus on calculations, drawings, software modeling, and QA of deliverables under guidance.


• Mid-Level Engineer (3–7 yrs): Lead design packages, coordinate across disciplines, manage vendor reviews, and guide juniors.


• Senior/Principal Engineer (7+ yrs): Define project design basis, lead multi-MW/utility scale portfolios, interface with clients, approve critical designs, and ensure risk management/value engineering.

• Software: STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MS Project, QGIS.


• Strong knowledge of IS 875, IS 800, IS 456, IS 2911, IS 1893 (India); SANS 10160, SANS 10162, SANS South Africa).


• Understanding of geotechnical investigations, hydrology, and stormwater design.


• Ability to optimize designs for cost, constructability, and durability.
