How You Will Contribute:
 

You will lead Ciena's India Legal function, shaping strategy, advising senior leaders, and ensuring we operate with integrity, compliance, and speed.

  • Serve as trusted advisor to the India Chairman, General Manager, and Senior Leadership Team.

  • Take the lead on complex commercial negotiations with customers, partners, and suppliers.

  • Drive proactive legal solutions to business challenges, embedding compliance and ethics into decision-making.

  • Guide stakeholders across Sales, HR, R&D, Finance, and Engineering on contracts, corporate governance, labor law, regulatory issues, privacy, anti-corruption, and more.

  • Manage and inspire a high-performing legal team of Company Secretaries and Contracts Administrators.

  • Oversee litigation, manage external counsel, and ensure effective risk mitigation.

  • Deliver training and create region-specific strategies to meet legal, regulatory, and business requirements.

  • Support M&A, partnerships, entity formation, and corporate restructuring in India.
     

The Must Haves:

  • Law degree and 10+ years of proven experience as a qualified lawyer in India, with in-house and/or leading law firm background.

  • Qualified Company Secretary and active member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.

  • Deep expertise in corporate/commercial law, contracts, corporate governance, labor, and compliance.

  • Strong contract negotiation experience — ideally in telecom, software, or technology sectors.

  • Exceptional business acumen with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.

  • Proven team leadership and ability to deliver results under tight deadlines.

  • Active affiliation with a national law or bar association.
     

The Assets:

  • Experience in the legal department of a US-listed company.

  • Exposure to US GAAP and revenue recognition rules.

  • Background in the telecom or advanced technology space.

  • Strong cross-cultural experience in a multi-national environment.
