Senior Engineer, Database Engineering

The Team: A highly skilled DBA with Performance Tuning & Data modeling & Data migration experience with a strong foundation in managing, optimizing, and securing enterprise-grade relational databases, combined with advanced capabilities in AI and machine learning. Proven experience in designing scalable database solutions, implementing high availability and disaster recovery strategies, and leveraging AI for predictive analytics, performance tuning, and automation. Bridges the gap between traditional database administration and modern data science by integrating AI-driven tools to proactively monitor systems, detect anomalies, and improve operational efficiency. Experienced in working with cross-functional teams including developers, data scientists, and cloud architects to deliver data-driven solutions aligned with business goals. The Performance Tuning Database Engineer who would focus on our database infrastructures estate and diagnose/re-write sql pgsql plsql function & tune database queries within our enterprise solutions division.

Responsibilities: The Database Engineer will manage and optimize SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL databases hosted in AWS environments such as Amazon RDS, Amazon EC2, and Amazon Aurora. The role requires expertise in database performance tuning, security, and cloud-based best practices. The Performance Tuning Database Engineer will collaborate closely with architects, developers, system administrators, and DevOps teams to ensure efficient database integration with business applications.

Database Management & Maintenance

• Creating logical and physical data models for databases and data warehouses, defining how data is structured, stored, and accessed
• Tune SQL Queries and stored procedures for optimal performance
• Implement database partitioning, compression, and indexing strategies for performance optimization.
• Maintain Performance Baselines and document tuning efforts and outcomes
• Identify bottlenecks in queries, indexes, execution plans and overall database design
• Proactively identify and resolve slow-running queries and blocking issues
• Administer and maintain SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL databases hosted on Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2.
• Configure and manage multi-AZ deployments, Read Replicas, and Data Guard (for Oracle) to ensure high availability.
• Manage SQL Server Always On configurations for improved failover and availability.

Application Support

• Work closely with developers to design and maintain optimized database schemas for Postgres/ SQL Server/ Oracle/MySql
• Support application teams in writing efficient queries, stored procedures, and functions.
• Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, locking issues, and query deadlocks.
• Assist developers in leveraging SQL Server Profiler, Oracle AWR, and AWS Performance Insights for tuning queries.

Performance Tuning & Optimization

• Utilize AWS tools like CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and CloudTrail for proactive database monitoring.
• Conduct execution plan analysis and implement query optimizations to improve response times.
• Tune Oracles Optimizer Statistics, QPM, SQL Profiles, and SQL Servers Query Store for enhanced performance.

AI Integration

• Using Amazon DevOps Guru or Azure Monitor for RDS
• Developing and deploying machine learning models to identify usage trends, predict outages, anomalies, error trends, and automate maintenance.
• Using Data Robot to integrate with databases to build ML models for forecasting query load, storage growth, etc.

Data Integrity & Security

• Implement security best practices using AWS services like AWS KMS, IAM Roles, and Security Groups for database access control.
• Manage encryption for data at rest and in transit using Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) for SQL Server and Oracle.
• Ensure compliance with organizational and industry security standards.

Backup & Recovery

• Design and implement automated backup strategies using AWS Backup and RDS Automated Snapshots.
• Develop and test disaster recovery plans.

Monitoring & Alerting

• Configure proactive alerts for performance issues, storage limits, and availability risks using CloudWatch and AWS SNS.

Collaboration & Documentation

• Collaborate with developers, cloud architects, and DevOps teams to integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines.
• Document database architectures, configurations, backup strategies, and recovery plans.

What Were Looking For:

Strong expertise in Postgres 12/13/14/15/16, SQL Server 2016/2019/2022, Oracle 12c/19c and MySQL.

Experience utilizing data modeling tools like ERwin or Power Designer.

Hands-on experience with Amazon RDS, EC2-hosted databases, and AWS migration tools like AWS DMS.

Proficiency in writing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, PL/SQLPGSQL and performance tuning techniques.

Familiarity with cloud automation tools such as AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible, Python.

Strong understanding of database security, auditing, and encryption best practices.

Experience in PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/SQL, PGSQL

14+ years of experience as a Performance Tuning with Data modelling DBA managing Postgres, SQL Server Oracle & MySQL databases.

Experience with AWS database migration strategies and cloud performance tuning best practices.
